Keeping the ocean and its ecosystems clean is crucial when it comes to preserving environmental health. We want to shine this month's spotlight on Rozalia Project, a nonprofit based in Burlington.

Their mission? They want to clean and protect the ocean and conserve the ecosystem. All rivers and streams affect the ocean and water supply. Discover what this organization does and how you can help by reading on, below!

Rozalia Project: A Snapshot

Rozalia Project started back in 2010. Founded by Rachael Miller and James Lyne, it identified the biggest threats to regional waterways early on: pollution. Discarded plastic is a major offender, and the team is hard at work cleaning up and developing technology-based solutions.

One such solution? The Cora Ball microfiber catcher. This easy-to-use laundry ball catches microfibers that shed off clothes and would otherwise end up in public waterways. It's just one example of the innovation you can expect from the Rozalia Project.

When summer arrives, their research vessel embarks for testing and cleaning. Three expeditions are scheduled for this summer with destinations spanning from the Hudson River to the Gulf of Maine!

What Sets this Organization Apart?

At Rozalia Project, you'll find much more than just a cleanup operation. This organization is dedicated to inspiring and educating coastal communities to address the issue of marine debris. That's what Expedition STEM is all about.

This summer, it will sail the Gulf of Maine with participants trained in art, science, engineering, policy, and more. They'll have the chance to work together and research marine debris in the region.

Rozalia Project believes in the power of data. Every piece of trash is rigorously catalogued. By partnering with the Marine Debris Tracker App, they let you get involved, too! You can save paper and log trash items on the app as you clean your own waterfront area.

How Can I Get Involved?

Aside from connecting with Rozalia Project through the app, there are many ways to join their mission. They're often involved in local initiatives to educate, raise awareness, and clean the waterways. They've been hosted by many schools in the area, too.

United By Blue, an eco-minded clothing and accessory brand, works with Rozalia and the Ocean Conservancy on local cleanups. They'll be hosting a cleanup with Rozalia on September 21, 2019 in the Burlington area. If you want to take part, just contact them and learn the details.

You can also donate to Rozalia via their website. Every little bit helps when it comes to keeping the ocean and regional waterways clean!
