Every year, Elton John and his partner David Furnish host the White Tie and Tiara Ball at their home, inviting attendees to empty out their jewelry boxes for an auction aimed at raising funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). Everything on the block carries a high value and even higher amount of prestige. But items that stole the limelight at this year's star-studded event are two Audi, chrome-finish R8 Spyders.

Speaking on the gala, Jermey Hicks, Director, Audi UK, says, "Sir Elton John's fundraising ball really is a golden ticket event that is as glamorous as it is hugely effective in fundraising terms...We are absolutely delighted to have been instrumental in raising such a magnificent sum for Sir Elton John's charity. We couldn't, of course, have done so without the incredible generosity of Sir Elton's guests, to whom we owe an enormous vote of thanks."1

How much did the chrome-finish Spyder soft-top sports cars go for? Well, the first one went for 250,000 pounds ($399,225)... In seeing the White Tie and Tiara Ball guests' interest in the Spyder, Audi then decided to donate another. The second sold for more than double the first: 620,000 pounds ($990,078).

To put this into perspective: The lightweight aluminum super car fitted with a 535PS petrol engine and manual transmission that jets from zero to 62 mph in a blink-of-an-eye 4.1 seconds...typically carries a price tag of 117,710 pounds ($187,971).

For those not familiar with EJAF, it was established in 1993 and manages 14-million pounds in 15 countries worldwide. Funds are used to help thousands of men, women and children fight AIDS by providing life-saving medication, information/educations, nutrition, shelter, and emotional support. The annual White Tie and Tiara Ball, is the EJAF's largest fundraising event. Audi has proudly supported the ball for nine years now.
